Sitting in the corner of the darkened balcony, Liz watched the family across the street. They seemed so happy. She could feel their joy as it effervesced from their bodies. They were celebrating a birthday.
Closing her eyes, she imagined she were there with them. For a moment she left the balcony, imagined hugs and kisses greeting her as she walked through the door.
"Why do you do this to yourself? You weren't invited. They don't want you there."
A tear ran down her cheek. She didn't belong there. She never would. Tipping her beer, Liz said, "Happy Birthday Mom."
