It was Lady that sensed the changes first. The mutt was Steven’s and she followed the boy everywhere. Then one day she growled at him, backing away from Steven when he stuck out his hand and called for her.
“Dumb dog, what’s your problem,” Steven growled, uncharacteristically angry. I told him to go play without her. Later, when Steven didn’t come home, I went to look for him. I found him bent over a deer, one of the ones we left feed for, so they’d come close. Steven had torn it open with his teeth and was eating the inside.
